Quick Start Guide

Get up and running with Screen Copilot in under 2 minutes. Follow these simple steps to start getting AI-powered guidance.

1

Open Screen Copilot

Navigate to the chat page by clicking "Get Started" or visiting the chat directly.

  • Sign in with your Google account for the best experience
  • No installation or browser extension required
2

Start Screen Sharing

Click the "Start Sharing" button at the bottom of the chat. Your browser will ask which screen, window, or tab you want to share.

  • Choose a specific window or tab for better focused guidance
  • Grant screen sharing permission when prompted by your browser
  • You can stop sharing anytime with a single click
3

Ask Your Question

Type your question in the chat box. The AI can see your screen and will provide context-aware guidance based on what's visible.

  • Be specific: "How do I add a drop shadow to this layer?" works better than "Help me"
  • You can ask follow-up questions to dive deeper
  • Reference what's on your screen — the AI sees it too
4

Follow the Guidance

The AI will provide step-by-step instructions tailored to your exact screen. Follow along and ask for clarification if needed.

  • Instructions update based on your current screen state
  • Ask for alternative approaches if the suggested method doesn't fit
  • The AI explains the 'why' behind each step so you learn as you go

Tips for the Best Experience

Share the Right Content

Share only the window or tab you need help with. This gives the AI clearer context and protects your privacy.

Ask Specific Questions

Instead of broad questions, try specific ones like "How do I resize this image to 1200x800?" for better results.

Use Follow-Up Questions

Build on previous answers with follow-ups like "Can you explain that last step in more detail?" or "What about a different approach?"

Keep Your Screen Visible

Make sure the content you need help with is visible on screen. The AI can only guide you on what it can see.

Asking Effective Questions

The quality of the AI's guidance depends largely on how you ask your questions. Here are some tips to get the most helpful responses.

Be Specific

The more specific your question, the more targeted and useful the response will be.

"How do I remove the background from this image in Photoshop?"
"How do I edit this image?"

Describe What You Want to Achieve

Tell the AI your end goal, not just the immediate step. This helps it provide a complete solution.

"I want to create a pie chart from this data showing the percentage breakdown by category"
"How do I make a chart?"

Reference Your Screen

Since the AI can see your screen, reference specific elements you see for precise guidance.

"What does the red error message at the bottom of my terminal mean?"
"I have an error"

Ask Follow-Up Questions

Don't hesitate to ask for clarification or explore alternatives.

  • “Can you explain that last step in more detail?”
  • “Is there a faster way to do this?”
  • “What if I want to apply this to multiple files?”

Understanding AI Responses

Screen Copilot's AI provides structured, context-aware responses. Here's how to make the most of them.

Step-by-Step Instructions

The AI breaks down complex tasks into numbered steps. Follow them in order — each step builds on the previous one. If a step doesn't make sense, ask for clarification before moving on.

Visual References

The AI references specific UI elements, menus, buttons, and areas on your screen. It describes their location (e.g., “the toolbar at the top” or “the panel on the right”) to help you find what you need.

Context-Aware Guidance

Responses adapt to what's currently visible on your screen. If you switch to a different window or navigate to a new page, the AI will adjust its guidance accordingly when you ask your next question.

Explanations, Not Just Instructions

The AI explains why each step works, not just what to do. This helps you learn and apply the same knowledge independently in the future.

AI Limitations

The AI does its best but isn't perfect. It may occasionally misidentify UI elements or suggest outdated menu locations. If something doesn't look right, let it know — it will correct course based on your feedback.

Conversation History

Screen Copilot saves your conversations locally so you can pick up where you left off or revisit past guidance.

Local-First Storage

Your chat history is stored in your browser using IndexedDB. This means your conversations stay on your device by default — they're private and accessible even when offline.

Managing Threads

Each conversation is saved as a separate thread. You can:

  • Start a new thread for each topic or task
  • Switch between threads from the sidebar
  • Delete threads you no longer need

Continuing Conversations

When you return to an existing thread, the AI has access to the full conversation history. This means you can reference earlier messages, build on previous guidance, or ask follow-up questions days later without re-explaining the context.

Privacy Note

Since conversations are stored locally in your browser, clearing your browser data will remove your chat history. Screen captures are processed in real-time and not stored by default.
